Expert Tips to Enjoy Stress-Free Holidays and Boost Your Wellbeing

Expert Tips for a Sensory-Friendly, Stress-Free Holiday: A Systems Approach for Neurodivergent Families

Holidays often bring disruption, new environments, social demands, changes to familiar routines. For neurodivergent children, these factors can quickly escalate stress. As a behavior technician, I use engineering and behavioral frameworks to plan, anticipate triggers, and build practical routines, fostering positive experiences for both child and caregiver.

Structured Planning: The Foundation
Identify key events and commitments in advance. Use visual schedules, countdown calendars, or preview stories to help children anticipate transitions and changes. Prioritize quiet time between events; map out possible sensory overload points (large gatherings, noisy meals). Build in alternative “safe spaces” your child can retreat to,a familiar room, a car with calming tools, or headphones for breaks.

Sensory Considerations in Real Life
Anticipate overstimulation: carry noise-cancelling headphones, preferred fidgets, sunglasses, or weighted lap pads. Allow for sensory-friendly adaptations, earlier arrival at gatherings, skipping high-intensity activities, or bringing familiar snacks to meals.

Engineering Routines for Success
Create checklists for packing sensory supports and transition cues. Pre-load transitions: talk through new situations, role play greetings or gift exchanges, and practice exit strategies. Reinforce flexibility by scheduling brief recovery periods after high-sensory input.

Supporting Parents and Caregivers
Caregivers need relief, too,tag-team with co-parents or relatives to rotate supervision. Reflect on past triggers, and adjust demands or expectations proactively. Allow yourself and your child space to recover; meaningful participation does not equal maximal participation.
